Question, if the university education should remain free as it is now in Poland, often arises in public discussions. It will probably soon appear again, as the governments plans to introduce partial fees for some medical services, and one may expect that higher education will be next on governments list. The are many argument both for and against such move. The defender of free university education claim it to be the only way that lets people from lower class to finish the, otherwise very costly studies and advance in social ladder. They say that after free and equal access to universities is a base of democratic society, and that the chance of getting an university degree should depend only on ones intelligence and knowledge, not the money of his or hers parents.
On the opposite side are free market liberals who consider education just another branch of services that, as all services should be paid for. They point at the fact that people much more care for what they pay for than what is provided to them for free, so fees would force students to better plan their educational career. To those who point out equal access, they answer that contemporary, free university education doesnt provide the at all. Statistics clearly prove that most students come from well situated families and very few are from rural areas. That suggests that there are many other problems that poorer candidates have to face, which in fact causes that only well-situated people can undertake studies. Personally I could accept charges for university education only if a system was created that would provide wide range of financial support for those who cannot afford paying for their studies.
